Learn How to Spot Different Types of Squirrels

Discovering Squirrel Varieties

Did you know there are over 200 types of squirrels worldwide? In the U.S., squirrels mainly fit into three groups: tree, ground, or flying squirrels. They all have bushy tails, short limbs, sharp claws (perfect for climbing and foraging), and pointy ears. The flying squirrels stand out, though, with skin flaps between their limbs that let them glide through the air!

Flying squirrels can soar over 150 feet, making them skilled at getting into homes. Tree squirrels use their climbing skills for the same purpose, while ground squirrels are often seen damaging lawns and gardens.

Spotting Tree Squirrels

Tree squirrels are the most common. In North America, you’ll mainly find gray, fox, and red squirrels. Gray squirrels, despite their name, can be gray, brown, black, tan, or even red. They live in northeastern and western states. Fox squirrels, found in the Eastern U.S., usually have reddish fur with tan bellies, and sometimes black ears and feet. Red squirrels, living in forested northern areas, change color with the seasons, from grayish-red to orange-red. They’re smaller than other tree squirrels and have ear tufts.

Ground and Flying Squirrels

Ground and flying squirrels form a smaller part of the U.S. squirrel population. They eat similar things to tree squirrels but live in different places. Ground squirrels, the tiniest of the bunch, dig burrows underground. Flying squirrels, found in both northern and southern states, nest in trees and are active at night, making them hard to spot.

Issues and Removal Advice

Squirrels can be a big problem for buildings. They burrow under foundations, rip apart insulation, and gnaw on electrical wires. Ground squirrels also wreck gardens and flower beds. Plus, all types of squirrels leave droppings, which can spread diseases. If you think you have a squirrel problem, it’s best to call pest experts like Virginia Professional Wildlife Removal Services, LLC.
